The new coffee shop and visitor center at the Iceland volcano is located in the expansive landscape surrounding Hverfjall volcano. This facility serves as a place for visitors to take a break and interact with each other. It replaces an older center and aims to combine functionality with environmental care. The design focuses on creating a connection with the natural landscape, featuring a twisting form that enhances the visitor experience.

Design and Layout

The layout of the building features two distinct paths for guests. One route leads directly to the main entrance, while the other takes visitors to a higher viewing platform. This setup encourages exploration and allows guests to enjoy both the inviting space of the coffee shop and the sweeping vistas of the volcano. The twisting shape of the building creates a gradual ascent, guiding visitors upward in a way that heightens their experience.

Materiality and Light

Natural light plays a key role in the design. Fully glazed walls on the longer sides of the building allow sunlight to brighten the interiors and connect indoor activities with the outdoor scenery. Light wood is used in the interior spaces, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The project limits the use of concrete, using it only for the foundations to minimize environmental impact, which illustrates a commitment to sustainable practices.

Circulation and Interaction

Inside the building, the design promotes easy movement. Service areas are centrally located, which helps keep outer spaces open and accessible. This arrangement leads to clear sightlines, encouraging visitors to interact with one another within the coffee shop. The layout fosters a sense of community, making it a perfect spot for those exploring the volcanic landscape.

Sustainable Design Principles

The building’s design prioritizes sustainability. Its lightweight structure is intended to reduce disruption to the surrounding environment. By using prefabrication techniques for the steel components, construction efficiency increases, while waste decreases. This thoughtful approach allows the structure to blend with the natural setting of Hverfjall volcano, creating a landmark that respects its surroundings.

Visitors can ascend to the rooftop viewing area, where they can take in the expansive vistas of the Icelandic landscape, creating a memorable connection between the building and the natural world.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
