The Kurgi Observation Tower is located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, designed to enhance the relationship between people and the landscape. It serves as an observation point, inviting visitors to explore their surroundings. The design aims to create a space that is open and connected to nature, allowing users to engage with the environment in an immersive and meaningful way.

Structural Form

The tower features a twist that moves from the ground to the viewing platform. This subtle change in form gives the structure an organic quality, reflecting the natural contours of the landscape. As visitors ascend, they encounter varying views of the biosphere reserve. The multi-directional balconies are intentionally designed to frame these views, enriching the experience of those within the tower. Each balcony offers a different perspective, encouraging exploration and engagement.

Materiality

A reinforced concrete elevator core stands at the center of the tower, providing crucial structural support. This core ensures that the building is accessible to all visitors. The strong nature of the concrete is balanced by the airy design of the tower. The use of vertical steel plates allows light to enter freely, casting soft shadows and creating a vibrant atmosphere. The plates are arranged to enhance the sense of openness and connection with the outside world.

User Experience

The staircase wraps around the elevator core, creating a flow between the different levels of the tower. This arrangement makes it easy for visitors to navigate their way up and down. With each step, there is an opportunity to connect with the landscape from various viewpoints. The design encourages an exploratory journey, allowing users to experience the unique ecological features of the biosphere reserve.

The Kurgi Observation Tower offers carefully framed views that help visitors appreciate the natural beauty of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve. The thoughtful arrangement of spaces creates an inviting atmosphere that encourages connection with the surrounding environment.
