"The Source" is located in Iceland’s dramatic landscape shaped by volcanic activity and geothermal features. It combines multiple functions, including social spaces, relaxation areas, and a cinema. The design draws from local culture and environmental characteristics, creating an experience that highlights Iceland’s natural beauty.

Design Concept

The concept focuses on honoring the environment, which has greatly influenced Icelandic culture and traditions. By utilizing the geothermal resources nearby, the design invites visitors to experience geothermal bathing alongside film viewings. The combination of outdoor and indoor screening areas offers a unique cinematic setting that connects users to the region's thermal waters.

Architectural Form

The structure consists of two primary volumes surrounding a central courtyard. This layout responds to the windy conditions typical of the site, resembling a natural crater that provides shelter. The southern volume contains the gathering area and restaurant, oriented toward the open meadow with views of Hverfjall volcano. This position maximizes sunlight and nurtures a sense of community. The northern volume houses the cinema, designed to limit light exposure, ensuring an optimal viewing experience.

Materiality and Techniques

Traditional Icelandic architecture is reflected in the use of turf walls, which provide sound insulation and minimize heat loss in colder months. A green roof complements the walls, aiding in temperature regulation and supporting local plant life. By incorporating these familiar materials and practices, the design emphasizes ecological considerations while respecting cultural heritage.

Integration with Landscape

The architectural form features sloped and curved shapes that blend with the surrounding topography. This thoughtful integration highlights the area's natural vistas and demonstrates a modern take on traditional building methods. The design captures the region's essence, balancing functionality with an appreciation for the beauty of its environment.
