**Overview**

HækkA Beer Spa is situated in the Skútustaðir region of Iceland, known for its rich geothermal resources and scenic landscapes. The design aims to create a tranquil environment for relaxation while integrating contemporary architectural practices with local traditions. This project seeks to foster a sense of connection to the natural surroundings and the cultural heritage of Iceland, employing innovative construction methods that prioritize sustainability.

**Design Strategy and User Experience**

The layout of HækkA emphasizes a strong connection to the exterior environment, featuring large windows and open spaces that draw in views of the landscape. Indoor areas are organized to promote both private reflection and social interaction, providing a range of amenities including treatment rooms, a restaurant, and retail space. The design incorporates traditional turf house elements, which resonate culturally while enhancing the building’s adaptability to various functions and user needs.

**Materiality and Sustainability Initiatives**

The material palette for HækkA reflects both functionality and aesthetic alignment with the local environment. Reinforced concrete ensures structural stability, while the use of wood and turf acknowledges traditional Icelandic building practices. Extensive glazing facilitates natural light and offers panoramic vistas. Sustainability is a key focus, with local materials such as insulation made from barley waste underscoring a commitment to reduce transportation emissions. The building's energy efficiency measures are designed to optimize thermal comfort, thereby minimizing energy use and maximizing the integration of sustainable practices in its operation.
