Turf-Covered Roof and Cross-Laminated Timber in a Community Film Center

Project in-detail

With a turf-covered roof and cross-laminated timber construction, the design serves as a community film center that reflects Icelandic cultural heritage while providing a versatile space for cinematic and public events.
5 key facts about this project
01
The roof is covered with locally sourced turf, reflecting traditional Icelandic building techniques.
02
Cross-laminated timber forms the primary structure, promoting sustainability and thermal efficiency.
03
An innovative diagonal seating arrangement enhances viewer interaction during screenings.
04
The design allows for viewing the aurora borealis from the auditorium when lights are off.
05
A green wall inspired by the film "Noi Albinoi" connects the interior space to the natural environment.

The Drakkar is a film center that blends Icelandic culture with modern design. It sits in the broad Icelandic landscape and is intended to honor the Viking spirit while offering a space for movies and community events. The design focuses on both function and cultural significance, making it an important place for visitors interested in Iceland's heritage.

Structural Design

The facility has a dual layout, featuring a cinema hall and a main event space that supports various activities. Elevated above the surrounding ground, The Drakkar is designed to stand out in the flat terrain. Its form responds to the environment, creating a contemporary landmark that reflects Icelandic identity.

Materiality

Cross-laminated timber is the main material used in construction, promoting sustainable building practices and connecting to local traditions. One section of the roof is covered with turf, showcasing a traditional Icelandic technique, while another part uses sheet metal that changes in appearance as it rusts. These material choices symbolize the ever-changing nature of Icelandic cinema and contribute to the local narrative.

Interior Experience

Inside, the auditorium features a diagonal resting surface that invites interaction. Visitors can enjoy film screenings while also experiencing the natural beauty of the aurora borealis during evening shows. Tropical greenery in the interior spaces adds vitality, contrasting with the cold, stark exterior.

Environmental Context

The design reflects the relationship between nature and architecture that is found in Iceland. The green wall, inspired by the film "Noi Albinoi," connects the indoor environment to the outdoor landscape. This detail illustrates the effort to honor Icelandic traditions while incorporating modern design principles.
