Turf-Clad Shelter Connecting Visitors to Iceland's Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

Clad in turf, the visitor center emerges from the volcanic landscape of Dummoborgir, offering an immersive experience that encourages exploration and reflection in the heart of Iceland’s unique geological features.
5 key facts about this project
01
Turf cladding allows the center to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
02
Pathways are carved into the earth, reflecting the geological features of the site.
03
Interior levels are varied, creating distinct experiences that connect visitors to the terrain.
04
Seating areas provide strategic viewpoints for observing natural phenomena like the Northern Lights.
05
Design prioritizes ecological balance, minimizing visual impact on the volcanic landscape.

The design located in the Black Lava Fields of Dummoborgir, Iceland, presents a unique opportunity to connect visitors with the natural landscape. The center aims to bridge the gap between people and their environment, honoring the local geological characteristics. The overall concept revolves around the idea of assemblage, creating a space that emphasizes harmony with nature and encourages exploration.

Pathway Integration

A carefully designed pathway system is fundamental to the visitor experience. These pathways flow through the site, integrating with the terrain. They guide visitors, allowing them to navigate between different areas of the center and into the striking landscape outside. This connection emphasizes the relationship between the built environment and the geological formations around it.

Dynamic Interior Spaces

Inside the center, spaces are arranged at different levels, creating a variety of experiences for the visitors. The sunken design of these interiors enhances the feeling of being close to the earth, aligning with the geological narrative of the location. This arrangement encourages people to engage with both the architecture and the surrounding environment, fostering a sense of immersion.

Seating Considerations

Seating areas are thoughtfully placed within the visitor center, serving as spots for rest and contemplation. These areas provide strategic views of the landscape, allowing visitors to appreciate the Northern Lights during the evenings. The design of these spaces invites quiet reflection, enhancing the connection between individuals and the natural beauty that surrounds them.

Materiality and Environmental Harmony

The exterior of the center is clad in turf, an important material choice that enables the structure to blend with its surroundings. This choice not only reduces visual impact but also emphasizes a commitment to respecting the local ecosystem. The use of turf enhances the integration of architecture with the landscape, allowing visitors to experience the topography in a more meaningful way.

A notable design detail is the interaction between pathways and seating areas throughout the center. Together, they create an inviting journey that connects visitors to the unique geological features of the Black Lava Fields and encourages discovery and appreciation of this extraordinary environment.
