The Iceland Thermal Springs Guest House at Vogafjós Farm Resort is situated in a distinctive geothermal landscape, designed to provide a retreat that balances modern needs with traditional forms. The design takes cues from the historic turf houses of Iceland, creating a space that encourages communal living while being sensitive to the surrounding environment. This guest house aims to connect visitors with the rich cultural context of the area.

Materiality

The building incorporates local materials that emphasize its connection to the landscape. Turf is used for its historical relevance as well as its ability to insulate against the cold climate. Volcanic rock is another significant material, providing strength and visual harmony with the natural surroundings. By using these locally sourced materials, the project reduces its environmental impact and supports sustainability.

Spatial Configuration

The interior layout is carefully designed to promote interaction among guests. Common areas such as the reception, lounge, dining space, and recreational zones are intended to encourage socializing. Meanwhile, private chalets offer individuals a place of respite. This balance between communal and private spaces reflects the essence of traditional Icelandic living, allowing for both connection and solitude.

Environmental Integration

A key feature of the design is its connection to nature. The green roof contributes to energy efficiency and helps the building blend with its surroundings. Pathways and landmark indicators guide guests through the resort, inviting them to explore the unique geothermal features of the area. This integration helps create a strong relationship between the building and the landscape it occupies.

The guest house highlights a thoughtful approach to design, combining traditional architecture with modern principles. Each detail is considered, aiming to enhance the experience for those who stay there while respecting Iceland’s natural and cultural heritage. The result is a welcoming environment that offers both comfort and a sense of place.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
