The Nemrut Observation Point is located on the volcanic landscape of the Nemrut volcano in Eastern Turkey, standing at 2,935 meters above sea level. This site is significant due to its natural beauty and cultural history. The design aims to connect visitors with the surrounding environment by offering a lookout point that showcases the stunning views of the caldera and its lakes. The building serves as both an observation area and a platform for experiencing the unique geological features of the site.

Architectural Integration

The design focuses on creating a strong link between the observation point and the landscape. By taking advantage of the volcano's height, the structure enhances visibility of the expansive caldera, which is nearly 40 square kilometers in size. It also contains the second-largest crater lake in the world. This thoughtful integration invites visitors to immerse themselves in the natural scenery while navigating through the area.

Pathway Design

A pathway constructed from local stones connects the observation point to a nearby ski lift station. This path weaves through the natural contours of the land, allowing visitors to experience the landscape as they approach the lookout area. Its gentle curves provide a more engaging journey, enhancing the overall interaction with the surroundings and encouraging visitors to appreciate their environment as they traverse toward the observation point.

Cultural Reference

The design incorporates a crescent shape that pays homage to Turkish cultural identity. This form serves to guide the movement around the site while symbolizing local traditions. The crescent transitions into a staircase that leads up to the observation platform. This thoughtful construction not only offers shelter from the elements but also encourages an appreciation of the views that unfold before visitors.

Structural Considerations

The observation point features a steel framework that allows for large openings to maximize views. These openings are arranged along the curves of the design, providing an unimpeded visual experience while managing pedestrian flow. The monolithic form echoes the shape of the volcano itself, creating a strong visual relationship between the architecture and the natural landscape.

The design of the observation point effectively blends into its volcanic surroundings. Its use of local materials helps establish a connection with the landscape, making it a natural extension of the geological features of the Nemrut volcano. This approach fosters a sense of belonging and encourages visitors to engage with both the structure and its remarkable setting.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
