Triple-Glazed Retreat Embedded in Birch-Enhanced Landscape

Project in-detail

Engineered for energy efficiency, the guesthouse features a fully transparent north facade for panoramic aurora views, while its embedded form utilizes cross-laminated timber and sheep's wool insulation to blend harmoniously with the Icelandic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
The north facade is fully transparent, maximizing views of the aurora borealis.
02
The building is partially embedded in the landscape for improved insulation.
03
Living quarters are elevated to enhance natural light and atmosphere.
04
A row of native birch trees provides privacy and blends with the environment.
05
Materials include sheep's wool insulation for energy efficiency and comfort.

The Vogafjós Farm + Resort Thermal Springs Guesthouse is located in the unique landscape of Iceland. It serves as a retreat where visitors can relax and recharge while staying connected to nature. The design concept focuses on key themes of protection, openness, and integration with the surrounding environment. This ensures that the facility offers both comfort and a strong sense of place.

Transparent Facade

The north facade of the building features expansive glass, allowing guests to enjoy unobstructed views of the aurora borealis. This choice enhances the relationship between the interior and the breathtaking natural light displays, creating a welcoming atmosphere. With this level of transparency, the design promotes an experience that draws guests into the beauty of the Icelandic night sky.

Landscape Integration

The building is partly set below ground, which helps it blend into the land and improves its insulating properties. This feature plays a key role in ensuring energy efficiency while minimizing the visual impact of the structure on its surroundings. By embedding the building within the landscape, it aligns with the local environment, making it feel like a natural extension of the land.

Functional Spaces

The layout includes various functional areas such as a common room, patio, bedrooms, and personal wellness spaces with saunas and hot tubs. These spaces have been carefully arranged to focus on guest comfort, catering to different needs. The design elevates the living areas above the main paths, allowing natural light to fill the rooms. This creates warmth and a cheerful atmosphere at all times of the day.

Material Choices

The choice of materials reflects a commitment to the local context. The construction uses 25 mm Icelandic birch veneer covered with a waterproofing membrane. Cross-laminated timber frames provide structural support, while triple-glazed windows ensure energy efficiency. Sheep's wool insulation further enhances the building's thermal performance, complemented by heated flooring and sturdy timber pile foundations for added comfort.

A notable design detail includes a rooftop garden that is visible from guest rooms. This garden invites nature into everyday life, reinforcing the connection between the guests and their surroundings.
