## Architectural Analysis Report: Bird Observation Tower at Pape Nature Park

### Project Overview

Located within Pape Nature Park, the Bird Observation Tower serves as a dedicated structure for birdwatching, thoughtfully designed to align with the ecological and visual context of its surroundings. The design draws inspiration from the triangular shapes associated with bird migration patterns, creating a geometric structure that complements the natural landscape while maintaining a low environmental impact.

### Spatial Arrangement and User Engagement

The tower features three distinct platforms, each designed to offer varied user experiences. The first platform, enclosed for protection from the elements, provides a sheltered observation point. The second platform transitions to a partially enclosed design, enhancing visibility and openness, while the third platform offers an unobstructed view, focusing on skyward observation. This tiered configuration not only facilitates diverse engagement with the environment but also ensures a gradual ascent that encourages exploration and panoramic viewing of the park’s diverse habitats.

### Material Selection and Sustainability

The materials selected for construction reflect a commitment to durability and ecological sensitivity. Accoya wood, known for its longevity and resistance to rot, comprises the majority of the tower's structure, while perforated metal panels at the first platform allow for dynamic light play throughout the day. The integration of glass and robust railings enhances visibility and safety, ensuring an unobstructed view of the surrounding wildlife. Furthermore, the modular design of the frame and stair components facilitates easy assembly and disassembly, reducing site disturbance and aligning with sustainable construction practices.

Strategically positioned within a vital wildlife habitat, the tower promotes conservation awareness, encouraging visitors to appreciate and engage with local ecosystems. The design's emphasis on natural materials and eco-friendly construction aligns with contemporary architectural principles, highlighting the relationship between human interaction and the environment.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
