"Up to Heaven" is a triangular observation deck located on the Hverfjall volcano in Iceland. The design provides views of the volcano's mouth, the Dimmuborgir lava fields, and Lake Mivatn. The triangular shape resembles a compass arrow pointing north, reflecting a connection to the landscape and inviting exploration.

Architectural Layout

The observation deck consists of two levels that enable a complete 360-degree view. The first level faces the volcano, creating a direct line of sight to this prominent feature. The second level broadens the perspective, allowing visitors to take in more of the surrounding scenery and feel a stronger link to the area.

Spatial Dynamics

The concept takes inspiration from Maurits Escher’s lithograph "Going Down and Going Up." An enclosed staircase promotes movement and exploration throughout the space. The first level features a warm, glazed area that protects visitors from the elements. It encourages gathering and provides comfort within the structure. The ceiling's multi-level cubic shapes add visual interest and complexity.

Material Considerations

The choice of materials supports the project's aim to blend with its surroundings. The exterior uses mirror metal for the triangular form, helping it fit into the landscape. Transparent glazing frames the first level, allowing light and views to flow through. Natural wood is utilized for elements like the amphitheater and stairs, creating warmth and a welcoming atmosphere.

Design Detail

The second level includes a multi-level amphitheater that offers seating and space for gatherings. This feature invites visitors to interact while enjoying panoramic views. It emphasizes the immersive experience the design aims to create, connecting people with the distinct features of the Icelandic landscape.
