5 key facts about this project
The Cocoon meditation cabin is located in Tokyo, designed to be a peaceful space for relaxation and self-reflection. Inspired by the journey of a caterpillar transforming within its cocoon, the design highlights themes of change and solitude. The structure's unique triangular shapes create a connection between the user and their surroundings, offering a moment of tranquility amid the busy urban landscape.
Structural Composition
The cabin features a strong framework formed by triangular shapes made from square steel tubes. These tubes are welded together to create a sturdy structure. This geometric design not only provides stability but also reflects the natural form of a cocoon, marrying practicality with visual interest.
Material Choices
The outside of the cabin is covered with stainless steel panels. This choice gives the building a clean look while ensuring it can withstand weather conditions over time. Stainless steel is also recyclable, which aligns with sustainable building practices. Inside, Yoshino Cyder wood is used for its pleasant smell and durability against the elements. This wood enhances the cabin’s interior, adding warmth to the space.
User Experience
The design prioritizes comfort and accessibility. The cabin features a floor made of suspended netting, allowing for a gentle elevation above the ground. This unique flooring encourages users to relax comfortably. Solar panels are fitted into the structure to provide energy for lighting and ventilation. LED lights attached to the panels ensure the space is well-lit without high energy use. The entrance includes a pull-down door that converts into a ramp, making it easy for visitors to enter.
Light and Atmosphere
At the top of the cabin, a molded acrylic cap allows sunlight to enter in soft, circular beams. This feature creates a dynamic interplay of light within the interior space, connecting the inside environment with the changing natural light throughout the day. The thoughtful design of the cabin fosters an atmosphere suited for meditation and introspection, inviting users to engage deeply with their surroundings.
