5 key facts about this project
01
Flexible triangular net structure enhances spatial organization and adaptability.
02
Constructed using OCB wood for structural integrity and a natural aesthetic.
03
Integrated rainwater harvesting system promotes sustainable resource management.
04
Interior spaces can be easily adjusted with convertible furniture elements.
05
Design divided into three distinct zones: public, private, and technical.

The design represents a modern reinterpretation of traditional European castles, situated thoughtfully to harmonize with its natural surroundings. It serves as a versatile living space organized into three main zones: public, private, and technical. The concept revolves around a triangular net structure that allows flexibility and adaptability, meeting various environmental conditions and user needs.

Architectural Organization

The layout divides the castle into three specific areas that each serve a unique purpose. The public zone encourages social interaction, while the private area offers a space for individual relaxation. The technical zone contains essential services, ensuring that the functionality of the building is maintained without disrupting the overall living experience. This modular arrangement allows for customized spatial organization, enhancing the accommodation of different user interactions.

Interior Flexibility

One of the standout features of the design is its focus on interior flexibility, which enables users to modify spaces according to their changing requirements. With convertible sofas and adjustable tables, the interiors can easily adapt to different group sizes and activities. This approach fosters a responsive living environment, balancing both community engagement and personal retreat, which aligns well with modern lifestyles.

Sustainability Measures

Sustainability is an important aspect, evident in the project’s integration of eco-friendly features. The design incorporates dry compost toilets and rainwater harvesting systems, highlighting a commitment to environmental stewardship. These features not only contribute to resource efficiency but also support a sustainable way of living, reflecting current architectural practices that prioritize harmony with nature.

Materials and Aesthetics

The material choice focuses on OCB wood and recycled wood, which support both the aesthetic and structural needs of the design. These materials add a natural quality to the spaces while ensuring durability. The use of wood enhances the connection to historical elements, giving the structure a warm and welcoming character that aligns with its castle-like appearance.

The triangular net structure is not just visually distinct; it also aids in effectively organizing spaces within the building. This design creates a unique dynamic, drawing attention while maintaining a connection to traditional architectural influences.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
