5 key facts about this project
The "White Star" Yoga House is located on a cliff in Vale de Moses, Portugal, providing a peaceful space for yoga practice and meditation. The design is inspired by the star tetrahedron, a geometric shape that symbolizes unity and the overcoming of duality. This form promotes balance and integrates the building with its natural surroundings, creating a tranquil environment for personal reflection.
Structural Design
The structure utilizes three monolithic tube-like rods that rise from a cylindrical foundation. These elements support a ground floor ceiling made of monolithic reinforced concrete, ensuring stability and anchoring the building within its landscape. This method enhances the overall aesthetic while allowing the architecture to blend with the terrain.
Spatial Organization
Inside, the layout promotes a smooth flow between spaces. Visitors enter through a triangular glass hall on level 1, which serves as a key transition area. Moving to level 2, guests find essential amenities, including a coffee corner, dressing rooms, showers, and toilets. This arrangement prioritizes comfort and practicality, ensuring a welcoming experience for all users.
Yoga Room and Light
On level 3, the large yoga room stands out for its thoughtful use of natural light. An upper pyramid design allows sunlight to fill the room, creating a soothing atmosphere perfect for practice. Horizontal light slits around the staircase further enhance the sense of space, contributing to a feeling of openness that supports both movement and stillness.
Connectivity and Accessibility
Level 4 features outer terraces that invite users to enjoy views of the natural surroundings. An elegantly designed bridge links the yoga room to the exterior, functioning as both an emergency exit and an accessible path for those with mobility challenges. This consideration for accessibility demonstrates a focus on inclusivity while encouraging users to connect with the outdoor environment.
The exterior is finished with white mordant applied to wooden surfaces, contributing to a unified visual identity that harmonizes with the landscape. The interior heavily features white along with pastel-hued floors, fostering a calming atmosphere that enhances the experience of mindfulness and tranquility during yoga practices.
