The Kurgi Tower is located in Latvia's Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve and serves as a significant feature for Kurgi Farm, known for its commitment to preserving Latvian Ardennes horses. The design incorporates the natural landscape while providing a space for educational experiences. Its shape recalls the outline of a horse, appealing to visitors' curiosity and creating a connection between the structure and local culture. The tower not only offers a viewpoint for observing the land but also fosters understanding of the surrounding environment and heritage.

Architectural Concept

The Kurgi Tower showcases a design that interacts thoughtfully with its surroundings. The form represents a horse, acting as a visible landmark that ties back to the farm's identity. Pathways crafted with care lead visitors through elevated areas and fields filled with wildflowers, inviting them to engage with nature. This thoughtful layout encourages exploration, making the landscape part of the experience.

Spatial Organization

Inside the Kurgi Tower, each level serves a distinct purpose to enhance visitor engagement and learning. The lower levels provide gathering areas and exhibition spaces where information about the farm and local culture is shared. The higher levels create smaller, more private areas for observation, allowing visitors to take in expansive views of the landscape. Each floor encourages a different level of interaction and contemplation as guests ascend.

Material Selection

The structure's appearance and strength come from a combination of materials that are carefully chosen. Triangular composite wood panels form the outer layer of the tower, inspired by traditional Latvian straw mobiles, linking the design to regional craftsmanship. A tessellated steel frame provides the necessary support while keeping a light visual presence. The addition of solar panels on the roof contributes to sustainability, generating energy to power the building's operations.

At the top of the tower, an observation balcony offers wide-ranging views, encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the landscape. This design detail enhances the relationship between the tower and the environment, inviting guests to appreciate the natural setting and reflect on the cultural importance of Kurgi Farm.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
