Il Grechetto is an architectural design that creates a connection between constructed spaces and the surrounding natural environment. Located in a region known for wine production, the design aims to provide immersive experiences for visitors. The concept focuses on offering a mix of communal areas for social activities and private spaces for relaxation, reflecting a sensitive approach to how people interact within the context of wine culture.

Spatial Arrangement

The layout is organized over two floors, with the ground floor acting as the main gathering area. A common space is designated for wine-tasting activities, providing an opportunity for visitors to come together. The arrangement includes an entrance to accommodations as well as pathways that lead to nearby parks and vineyards. This thoughtful planning invites exploration while ensuring clear connections between different parts of the building.

Private Modules

On the first floor, private modules cater to individual needs, allowing users to take a break from the busy common areas below. Bedrooms and living spaces are designed for comfort, creating peaceful settings where people can rest. This blend of social and private areas highlights the design’s flexibility, offering spaces for both group interactions and personal solitude within the same structure.

Material Selection

The materials chosen for the building serve both practical and aesthetic functions. Travertine is used for exterior surfaces, offering durability alongside a pleasing appearance, while a waterproof membrane protects the structure from weather. Civil plaster and brick tile enhance the building's strength. To improve energy efficiency, materials like extruded expanded polystyrene and expanded polystyrene are used for insulation, along with corrugated brick and stone wool for soundproofing.

Sustainability Features

The design incorporates elements that focus on sustainability. Crystalline silicon photovoltaic panels generate energy, contributing to the building's renewable energy goals. A galvanized steel support structure effectively manages rainwater and provides stability. The use of radiant panel heating and cooling systems enhances comfort indoors. Plasterboard ceilings finish the space with a clean, simple look that matches the entire design.

Light plays a vital role in the experience within Il Grechetto, with sunlight casting interesting shadows across the travertine surfaces. As visitors move through the space, they can observe how the design interacts with the time of day and the changing environment. This attention to detail enriches the experience, inviting a deeper connection to both the art of winemaking and the natural landscape surrounding the structure.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
