Translucent Fiberglass Cairns Enhancing Cultural Navigation in Iceland's Landscape

Project in-detail

Designed with translucent fiberglass cairns that reflect Icelandic folklore, the project enhances navigation while providing essential visitor amenities in a dynamic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Translucent fiberglass modules create a luminous quality that reflects local folklore.
02
Cairn-inspired stacking forms serve both as landmarks and cultural references.
03
Interactive design elements harness local wind energy for sustainability.
04
Pathways flow in a dynamic ribbon shape, enhancing spatial experience and navigation.
05
Smaller cubes provide adaptable furniture and define interactive areas throughout the site.

The design is set in the striking landscape of Iceland, where it functions as a guiding presence that connects visitors to the rich cultural narratives of the region. Its primary purpose is to provide a navigational experience, inviting people to explore the unique beauty of the environment. The concept draws from traditional cairns and the folklore of elves and trolls, blending these elements into a cohesive language that reflects the natural surroundings.

Cairn-Inspired Structures

The design features stacking forms that resemble traditional cairns, acting as both landmarks and cultural references. These structures help guide people through the variable Icelandic weather, providing not only navigation but also a symbolic connection to local history. The architectural form captures the spirit of the place, creating a dialogue between the built environment and the landscape.

Circulation Pathways

Circulation pathways are designed with a flowing character, mimicking natural movements like lava or rushing water. This design choice allows visitors to engage deeply with the features of the landscape, following paths rich with meaning. The pathways ensure unobstructed views, enhancing the experience as individuals traverse the site, illustrating the stories deeply rooted in the ground they walk on.

Modular Design Elements

The design uses a variety of prefabricated modules that differ in size, creating opportunities for interaction throughout the space. Smaller cubes contribute to a dynamic atmosphere, while larger modules house important facilities, including restrooms and visitor centers. The stacking strategy creates an inviting environment that encourages exploration and varying experiences within the site.

Environmental Integration

Environmental considerations play a significant role in the design. Smaller cubes are crafted to interact with elements like wind, which supports energy efficiency. This aspect aligns with current architectural trends focused on sustainability. Energy-efficient lighting is also integrated, activating in response to visitors and providing guidance as darkness descends.

Fiberglass is utilized for the stacking modules, lending a sense of translucency to their appearance. This choice draws on the folklore that inspires the project, giving the structures an ethereal quality that connects them to the stories of Iceland. When illuminated, they blend into the environment while serving as engaging elements, enhancing the unique atmosphere of the landscape.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
