La Petite Ceinture, a former railway line that circles Paris, is being transformed into a residential space for a young couple. The project emphasizes the potential for sustainable living within urban areas. Its design seeks to recreate and redefine neglected city spaces, showcasing how thoughtful architecture can enhance livability in crowded settings.

Architectural Concept

The design utilizes the existing structure of the railway bridge, integrating its walls and roof into the new living space. This approach highlights the strength of reusing existing materials while fostering a connection to the environment. The layout consists of three distinct spaces across two levels, allowing for functional separation yet maintaining a sense of unity throughout the home.

Integration with Environment

The connection to nature is a key feature of the design. Large openings in the layout invite natural light and create a relationship with the outdoor surroundings. By aligning the living spaces with the adjacent greenery, the home feels larger and more inviting. Garden spaces for growing vegetables and provisions for renewable energy support a lifestyle that prioritizes sustainability in daily living.

Materiality and Structural Components

Materials play a vital role in the project's execution. The use of reinforced concrete and timber framing ensures strength and durability, essential for a dwelling built beneath a bridge. A double skin translucent façade adds thermal insulation, which helps maintain a comfortable indoor climate. Additional features include stainless steel railings and copper gutters, which add practical elements while contributing to overall aesthetic quality.

Design Details

The design thoughtfully addresses housing challenges prevalent in Paris, particularly given the increasing population and limited living space. By reimagining a railway bridge, La Petite Ceinture provides a viable option for contemporary residential living. A terrace that overlooks the greenery enhances the sense of connection to nature, providing a personal outdoor space for relaxation. This project illustrates the possibilities of integrating thoughtful residential solutions within urban landscapes.
