Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Universe seeks to provide an affordable housing solution in a city known for its high living costs. The project focuses on young professional couples, transforming a vacant lot into compact and functional living spaces. The design prioritizes privacy and community, aiming for a balance that enhances everyday life in an urban setting.

Design Concept

The concept of the project places importance on creating efficient living environments that support quality of life. The layout revolves around a central core, encouraging movement and interaction among residents. This design fosters a sense of connection while also allowing for personal space, providing an opportunity for residents to engage with one another or relax in solitude.

Materiality

A significant aspect of Universe is its use of a polycarbonate translucent facade system. This innovative material choice enables privacy while also filling the interior with soft natural light. By eliminating traditional windows, the facade contributes to a secure environment for residents. Such decisions about materials play a crucial role in achieving both functional and aesthetic goals.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the layout is crafted to enhance usability and flexibility, featuring intimate spaces that cater to various daily needs. The open configuration allows for communal experiences while maintaining privacy. The thoughtful arrangement of shared and private areas reflects careful consideration of residents' lifestyles, creating an inviting atmosphere for everyday life.

Sustainability in Urban Living

Universe is a step forward in creating sustainable housing solutions by utilizing a vacant site for living spaces. The project shows how smart design can add to the urban fabric without compromising quality of life. Combining innovative materials with effective layouts, Universe serves as an example of how urban developments can encourage environmental awareness and community connection.

The outcome is evident in the calming environment within each unit, where soft light merges with intimate spaces, offering a comfortable retreat for residents.
