"Insights" is designed as a retreat that focuses on peace and reflection. It is inspired by the traditional Japanese Tatami layout, which embodies simplicity and tranquility. Located in a natural setting, the project consists of several 'Insights Tents' that allow occupants to engage closely with their surroundings. The design prioritizes an experience that fosters a connection to nature.

Concept and Design Approach

The central feature is the 'Insights Tent,' an enclosed space made from translucent fabric. This choice permits natural light to enter freely, enhancing the inner atmosphere while maintaining a strong relationship with the outside world. Users are encouraged to interact with their environment, promoting a sense of calm and introspection.

Amenities and Functionality

Inside each 'Insights Tent,' there are essential amenities like a kitchen, sleeping areas, and storage for personal items. A key feature is the inclusion of a traditional Chinese stove-bed, known as a Kang. This stove-bed ensures comfortable temperatures year-round, addressing both heating and sleeping needs. Such features support user comfort while remaining energy-efficient.

Sustainability and Environmental Integration

The design incorporates various sustainable elements. Ropes connect the tent's outer shell to surrounding trees for structural support, while a large, angled roof collects rainwater and directs sunlight appropriately. Furthermore, embedded photovoltaic cells in the fabric generate solar energy. Rainwater collection systems utilize sand and UV filters, ensuring a reliable source of clean water.

Additional Design Features

Heating is provided by a cast iron stove that is built into the concrete base of the tent. This system works alongside air heating methods that use secondary heat exchangers, promoting climate control. Effective insulation within the concrete enhances energy efficiency. The tent openings are fitted with mosquito nets, allowing for ventilation while maintaining a connection to nature.

Each 'Insights Tent' presents a careful balance of utility and user experience. With attention to detail in both form and function, the design creates a refuge that invites occupants to embrace the rhythm of nature while enjoying modern comforts.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
