The design project explores the theme of a beehive, situated in a space that promotes interaction and community building. The concept emphasizes the vital role of bees in our environment, encouraging visitors to consider their social behaviors and ways of communication. The layout is intended to create a rich experience, allowing for connections with both nature and fellow participants.

Hexagonal Structure

At the center of the project is a prominent hexagonal structure that serves as a gathering place. This geometric shape mirrors the natural form of honeycombs, reinforcing the theme of community. The design encourages movement and interaction, guiding visitors through various spaces that reflect the dynamic nature of a hive.

Honeycomb Midsection

The middle section features a honeycomb that includes three separate concessions. This area allows visitors to buy food and beverages, enhancing the communal experience. The arrangement of this space symbolizes the interconnectedness found in bee communities, highlighting the importance of working together.

Materiality and Lighting

The design uses solid roasted wood for its framework, ensuring strength and visual appeal. Torrefied wood acts as a protective layer, extending the structure's lifespan while requiring less maintenance. Shard boards are applied for exterior cladding, blending functionality with the natural look of the building. Lights are thoughtfully placed to create a warm atmosphere, encouraging people to engage with one another.

Seating Arrangements

Carefully arranged seating encourages conversations and social interactions, enhancing the sense of community within the space. The layout creates cozy areas that promote exchanges while keeping a connection to the surrounding environment. Textured surfaces and natural shapes add to the sensory experience, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the space and the company of others.

With these design elements, the project conveys a clear message about the importance of connection to nature and ecological balance. It creates a welcoming environment that reflects the life of bees and the idea of a thriving community.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
