03

05
Timber framework draws on traditional building methods while promoting sustainability.

The Painters Lake House is located in the picturesque landscape of Latvia, designed specifically as a residence for artists. The project connects thoughtfully with its surroundings, emphasizing simple and modest design. It consists of three main structures: the Residence, the Painters Studio, and the Carpenters Workshop. Each structure serves a specific purpose while supporting interaction and collaboration among the artists.

Architectural Arrangement

The layout positions the structures around a central activation zone, which enhances movement and connectivity. This careful arrangement preserves important views of the adjoining lake. Inside the Residence, large communal living spaces benefit from natural light, fostering a comfortable atmosphere. Private areas for each artist and their families are included, enabling both group engagement and personal retreat, catering effectively to the different needs of the occupants.

Studio Design

The Painters Studio is designed to be flexible, accommodating the varying needs of artists working in the space. A central hearth divides the studio into two sections, allowing for different activities to take place simultaneously. The design includes internal sliders and stationary louvers to adjust the studio’s environment. This adaptability inspires creativity, making it suitable for various artistic processes and preferences.

Materiality and Form

The integrity of the Painters Lake House is achieved through its material choices. The structure is built with a full timber joined framework, reflecting local building traditions. The foundations use vernacular stone, further connecting the buildings to the landscape. The overall form follows the rule of thirds, offering a balanced presence. Overhangs accentuate the transition between interior and exterior spaces, providing shelter while maintaining visual harmony.

Environmental Interaction

Large windows throughout the buildings frame views of the lake and surrounding nature, allowing for changing light patterns inside. This connection to the outdoors enriches the living experience and promotes a sense of calm. The overhangs create defined thresholds, encouraging movement between in and out, emphasizing a thoughtful relationship with the environment. Each detail is deliberate, reinforcing the purpose of the Painters Lake House as a nurturing space for creativity and artistic expression.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
