5 key facts about this project
The project is located at the foot of Hverfjall Volcano, where the design brings together the natural landscape and a built environment through careful spatial planning. The aim is to create a connection between the cultivated garden and the wild terrain of the volcano. A clear boundary is established to guide visitors from the garden into the volcanic surroundings. The café, envisioned as a garden, serves as a bridge to the natural world, enhancing the overall atmosphere.
Spatial Organization
The layout features a circular courtyard that encourages social interaction. This central space is supported by two functional volumes designed for various activities. This arrangement allows visitors to explore and engage with their environment. Three voids are incorporated into the design, each serving specific roles that add depth to the overall layout. A linear pathway invites visitors to focus on the volcano, reinforcing the link between the structures and the natural landscape.
Materiality
Materials play an important role in the design, focusing on sustainability and harmony with the environment. The structure uses wooden beams, which are paired with wool insulation for improved thermal performance. Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) is used for the second floor, providing a strong yet lightweight element. Concrete walls offer stability and durability, while a bitumen roofing membrane helps manage moisture, ensuring the building's longevity.
Integration with Landscape
The design reflects a thoughtful relationship between architecture and the landscape, with the garden acting as a path to the volcano. This connection enhances visitor experiences by allowing people to engage with both the built and natural worlds. The garden contrasts with the rugged volcanic features, creating a dialogue between different elements.
The varied spatial elements work together to create an environment that feels alive and connected to its surroundings. Visitors are guided through defined spaces that lead them deeper into the experience of the site.
