The Meditation Cabin located at Stone Terrace, Vale de Moses, Portugal, serves as a peaceful retreat designed for self-reflection and meditation. It blends into the surrounding landscape, offering a serene environment for visitors seeking solace. The design emphasizes a harmonious connection between the structure and its natural setting, promoting simplicity and tranquility throughout the cabin.

Site Integration

Visitors approach the cabin via a pathway that weaves through carefully arranged greenery, creating a sense of familiarity before arriving at the colorful entrance. This deliberate journey invites occupants to slow down and prepare for a moment of contemplation. A high-pitched ceiling within the cabin enhances the feeling of openness while providing comfort, creating an atmosphere conducive to meditation.

Spatial Dynamics

Light plays a vital role in the interior, with strategically positioned openings allowing natural brightness to filter in. These apertures vary in opacity, which serves to block immediate views while revealing glimpses of the more distant landscape. This layering of visibility enriches the experience, drawing occupants’ attention outward while encouraging inward reflection.

Materiality and Sustainability

The cabin uses cross-laminated timber for its structural framework. This material not only provides strength but also insulation, helping maintain a comfortable indoor climate. The masonry foundation gives the cabin stability, and wood shingles on the roof integrate it with local design traditions. The inclusion of fixed and operable glazing with tinted film manages sunlight effectively and enhances energy efficiency, reflecting a commitment to sustainable design.

Design Elements

Inside the cabin, functional components support comfort and practicality. A wood-burning fireplace creates warmth, making the space inviting during cooler weather. A ventilated skylight facilitates natural airflow, contributing to the overall comfort. The installation of solar panels emphasizes the intention to use renewable energy, while the grey water system showcases an awareness of resource usage, aligning with the design principle of environmental responsibility.

The overall design provides a minimalist environment where functionality meets simplicity. This creates a calm space that encourages users to engage in mindfulness and introspection, allowing them to fully appreciate the relationship between the cabin and its beautiful natural surroundings.
