ROOT is a cabin located in a remote natural area, designed to enhance the retreat experience. The main idea behind the cabin is to create a space that moves from public to private, allowing users to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying a sense of seclusion and calmness.

Spatial Organization

The design emphasizes a journey for the users. It is structured to help individuals step away from their everyday lives and enter a peaceful environment. As visitors approach, a walkway directs them toward the cabin, which rises in height. This gradual elevation effectively obscures views from the outside, creating a sense of safety and marking the shift from the outside world to a tranquil inner space.

Façade and Materiality

The exterior of the cabin features patterned tiles inspired by traditional Portuguese azulejos. These patterns serve not only as decoration but also enhance the functionality of the design. They provide varying privacy levels while allowing users to connect with the landscape around them. The façade balances openness and enclosure, letting users appreciate nature without feeling exposed.

Functional Layout

Inside, the cabin is designed for wellness activities. The first floor is dedicated to private massage sessions, while the second floor is suitable for yoga or meditation. The design allows for scenic views on one side, while ensuring privacy on the other side of the cabin. This layout supports relaxation, creating an environment that encourages both physical and mental well-being.

Site Adaptability

ROOT’s modular design allows it to be placed in different terrains. It stands on beams that vary in length, which helps maintain a level floor, even on sloped ground. The transitional corridor is adaptable, so it can change based on the geography around it. This responsiveness to the environment underscores the design's ability to fit naturally into its surroundings.

The patterned façade offers a play of light and shadow that enriches the internal atmosphere. This interaction invites elements of nature inside while ensuring privacy, making the cabin a retreat for reflection and tranquility.
