The Vine Retreat is an architectural response to the distinctive landscape and cultural context of Cambodia, designed around an ancient bomb crater. The Coiling Pod serves as a retreat that encourages personal reflection and community connection. With influences drawn from the philosophy of Kundalini and the natural environment, the design highlights the relationship between users and their surroundings, creating spaces that invite both movement and contemplation.

Conceptual Framework

The design of the Coiling Pod stems from the ideas of Kundalini, which represents the intertwining of energy and physical space. The layout separates areas into passive zones for relaxation and active spaces for social interaction. This arrangement reflects a physical and spiritual journey, allowing occupants to navigate their personal experiences while engaging with the space around them.

Spatial Composition

The Coiling Pod features a curved form that enhances the sense of shelter and intimacy. Raised above ground on stilts, the structure has a minimal impact on the landscape, allowing rainwater to flow freely and preserving the natural features of the site. This elevation also provides an opportunity for users to take in the views of the surrounding area from a new perspective.

Materiality and Construction

Interior finishes use light local plywood, aligning with sustainable practices by incorporating materials from the region. Timber beams provide structural support, while timber cladding on the exterior highlights a natural aesthetic. These material choices reinforce the connection between the structure and its environment, ensuring that the Coiling Pod blends in with the landscape while promoting the use of local resources.

Environmental Considerations

Natural ventilation plays an important role in the design of the Coiling Pod. Operable windows are positioned for effective air circulation, which helps to maintain comfort without relying on mechanical systems. This feature reduces energy consumption and fosters a stronger interaction with nature, as fresh air enters the space, enhancing the overall experience of the retreat.

The design incorporates gentle rooflines that create varying patterns of light and shadow within the pods. These thoughtful details contribute to the calm atmosphere that defines the retreat experience, encouraging visitors to connect with themselves and the surrounding environment.
