5 key facts about this project
The design of A ROOM serves as a wine tasting pavilion situated in the beautiful landscape of the Centro region of Portugal. The structure draws inspiration from the surrounding vineyard, fostering a close relationship between the natural world and built environment. This space allows visitors to engage fully in the wine tasting experience while appreciating the views and ambiance of the vineyard.
Circulation and Layout
The design rethinks how visitors approach the space, guiding them from the street, R. Sao Goncalo, through a central square. This area provides access to additional facilities such as a chapel and conference room. The layout encourages visitors to explore and enjoy their journey toward the pavilion. Located near the winery, the pavilion offers unobstructed views of the vineyard and integrates the landscape into the wine tasting experience.
Functional Zoning
The pavilion is organized into three distinct zones that promote easy movement and interaction among guests. A main circulation area, two meters wide, supports smooth visitor flow. Unique tables designed for wine presentation are set up at 0.9 meters wide. The seating area, which has a minimum width of two meters, faces the vineyard, giving guests an inviting view. These defined spaces cater to both personal and group settings, accommodating various visitor needs.
Sustainability and Material Choices
Sustainability features prominently in the design through the use of high-quality timber sourced from Portugal. This choice supports environmental building practices while highlighting local craftsmanship. The design incorporates a flexible tool-kit concept, allowing the pavilion to expand and adapt in the future without losing its essential character. This thoughtful approach to materials enhances the project's environmental responsibility and durability.
Design Evolution
The design has been updated to address modern health concerns, particularly related to social distancing. Long tables allow for smaller groups to gather while maintaining space between individuals. This adaptability shows a clear understanding of current visitor expectations. Architectural elements like generous windows invite natural light and fresh air into the space, providing a comfortable environment for wine tasting.
The connection between the pavilion and the landscape is made stronger by its large windows, inviting the beauty of the vineyard inside. This design detail encourages visitors to feel linked to the outdoor setting, enhancing their overall experience.
