Surfer's Haven, located in Westport, Washington, is a timber pavilion designed to serve the local surfing community and address the risks of potential tsunamis. The structure functions as both an exhibition space and an evacuation site, embodying a design that emphasizes safety while celebrating the essence of the region's surfing culture. With its thoughtful integration into the coastal landscape, Surfer's Haven creates an environment that enhances user experience and encourages community engagement.

Architecture Concept

The design focuses on creating a space that combines cultural appreciation with practical safety features. By responding to environmental challenges, the pavilion serves as a reminder of the importance of local context in architecture. It accommodates various activities related to surfing and community events, strengthening its role as a center for social interaction for both locals and visitors.

Material Use

Surfer's Haven utilizes sustainable and accessible lumber throughout its construction, reflecting Washington's longstanding tradition of timber building. This choice of materials not only highlights local resource use but also promotes environmental sustainability. Heavy timber is incorporated to ensure the structural stability of the pavilion, providing the necessary strength to withstand potential tsunami impacts while adhering to modern building practices.

Spatial Experience

As visitors move through the pavilion, they encounter a sequence of spaces that shift from open exhibition areas to more intimate, sheltered zones. This design encourages exploration and interaction, allowing users to experience a variety of atmospheres. The arrangement of these spaces maintains a connection to the surrounding environment, inviting people to share in the experiences of others while enjoying different aspects of the pavilion.

Visual Engagement

The upper levels of Surfer's Haven offer views over the ocean, highlighting the relationship between the natural landscape and the building. As light changes throughout the day, the pavilion transforms, creating a new atmosphere. This visual connection not only adds to the overall experience but also reinforces the pavilion's purpose as a place for observing the dynamic beauty of Westport and the local surfing culture.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
