The project at Kurgi farm is located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, known for its diverse landscape and ecological value. Combining the functions of an observation tower and a racecourse, the design focuses on enhancing visitor experiences while promoting a connection with nature. The overall concept emphasizes harmony, showcasing the cultural heritage of the region, particularly highlighting the importance of the Latvian Ardennes horse breed.

Design Concept

The observation tower serves as a key feature in the area, placed close to the main road for easy access. It caters to both tourists and locals, providing a space for gathering and exploration. The structure is intended to support equestrian activities and offer sweeping views of the hills and lakes formed by glacial processes in the reserve.

Materiality

Timber and glass are used as the main materials for the tower. The elevation consists of timber louvres that vary in spacing and height, allowing the building to blend with its surroundings. This choice not only enhances the visual appeal but also encourages natural airflow. The observation deck is protected by glass louvres, which serve as balustrades. They maintain clear sightlines and ensure safety while providing uninterrupted views of the landscape.

Visitor Experience

Guests are welcomed into a courtyard where they can tie up their horses, creating a space for rest before further exploration. Two pathways lead to the observation deck: one is a staircase, and the other is an elevator. Offering these two options increases accessibility and emphasizes the integration of visitors into the natural setting.

Cultural Significance

The design incorporates a memorial aspect to celebrate the Latvian Ardennes horse breed. This connection to local heritage gives the structure a distinct identity and resonates with visitors. As they move up the tower, guests encounter changing perspectives that frame the surrounding beauty, fostering a deeper relationship between the architecture and the natural environment.

The observation deck invites visitors to engage with wide panoramic views, allowing them to appreciate the relationship between the structure and the landscape of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve.
