## Overview

Vila do Descanso, situated in Portugal, serves as a dedicated elder care facility designed to cater to the increasing demand for supportive living environments for the aging population. The facility's design prioritizes functionality and comfort, creating spaces that encourage well-being and foster community interactions among residents. Drawing inspiration from Portugal's cultural heritage, the architectural framework balances traditional elements with contemporary sustainable practices.

## Spatial Configuration

### Community-Centric Layout

The facility's site plan features a cluster arrangement of buildings that optimize communal spaces and promote social engagement. Key elements include gathering areas to facilitate socialization, therapy rooms for wellness programs, and gardens providing peaceful outdoor environments that connect residents with nature. Internally, the design includes single and twin rooms that maintain privacy while encouraging companionship, alongside common areas like libraries and dining rooms to support community activities.

### User-Focused Features

The design addresses the specific needs of elderly residents through thoughtfully considered features. Adaptive, universal access ensures the entire facility accommodates individuals with mobility challenges. Mechanical windows facilitate ease of use, promoting independence. Additionally, the incorporation of natural light throughout the facility enhances the overall well-being of residents, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting.

## Material Selection and Sustainability

### Material Choices

The project employs a variety of materials that emphasize both structural integrity and aesthetic warmth. Glued-laminated timber and plywood provide a renewable and versatile surface, while gypsum panels offer smooth interior finishes. Solid brick contributes to thermal mass, aiding temperature regulation, and concrete serves foundational and structural purposes. Insulation materials are utilized to enhance energy efficiency.

### Sustainable Practices

Vila do Descanso embraces sustainable design through several initiatives. Solar panels are strategically installed to optimize energy capture, while rainwater collection systems enhance water management. Natural ventilation is achieved through building gaps, reducing dependence on mechanical cooling systems. The project emphasizes the use of reusable and recyclable materials, ensuring minimal environmental impact and aligning with ecological sustainability goals.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
