ELEMENTOS is located in Oleiros, at the foot of Serra da Estrela, and serves as a Centre for Yoga. The design creates a strong connection between the natural surroundings and the built environment, promoting wellness and mindfulness. Inspired by the five elements—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space—the space is organized in a way that reflects these themes and enhances user experience.

Zoning

The layout features distinct zones designated for various activities. The Earth zone includes a garden at the entrance, blending the structure with the landscape. Transitional spaces embody the Fire element, featuring locker rooms, toilets, and a fireplace that adds warmth to the atmosphere. The break-out area is associated with the Wind element and is designed for relaxation and interaction, offering a pantry and comfortable seating.

Natural and Spatial Qualities

The project also emphasizes natural light and spacious design. A quiet zone is home to a yoga hall with large, open spaces that support meditation and practice, representing the Space element. Nearby, the viewing zone includes a water harvesting pond, which connects the building to the surrounding environment and symbolizes the Water element.

Materiality and Sustainability

Materials are chosen for their practicality and contribution to the design's intent. Ferro-Cement is used for structural elements, providing strength and durability. Timber is incorporated for features like horizontal bi-fold windows, allowing fresh air and daylight to enter while adding a warm touch to the interiors. Sustainability is an important focus, with practices such as terrain farming for soil stability and thermodynamic solar systems for heating water integrated into the overall design.

The combination of these elements creates a thoughtful environment that encourages individual reflection and community interaction. Enhanced by large skylights, the building invites natural light in, fostering a peaceful setting for yoga and contemplation amidst nature.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
