5 key facts about this project
Around & Within is set in a natural landscape, designed to create a connection between the built structure and its surroundings. It features two main areas: one for processing natural essences and another for meditation. The design promotes openness and an appreciation of nature, encouraging users to engage with the environment on multiple levels.
Natural Essence Processing Space
The essence processing area faces north, allowing for optimal sunlight that enhances the production process. This space is surrounded by glass, providing clear views of the outside. Inside, bowls filled with essences are arranged in a framework that incorporates Chidori joinery, combining practicality with visual appeal. The design allows sunlight to illuminate the space, creating a lively atmosphere.
Meditation Space
Next to the processing area is the meditation space, accessed by descending a few steps. This transition to a lower level emphasizes a calming experience, reminiscent of returning to nature. A high ceiling contains an opening, letting natural light pour in and casting shadows that change throughout the day. Large windows on the eastern walls offer wide views of the landscape and easily connect the indoor and outdoor environments.
Integration of Functional Elements
Practical features are also part of the design. A retractable table on the west side can be used for processing materials or as a surface for personal items. A shelf holds a water filter and a washbasin, promoting sustainable practices by using recycled rainwater. These elements enhance the usability of the space without detracting from its overall design.
Sustainability and Materiality
The structure includes a timber framework on the west side that supports a green wall filled with potted flowering plants. This feature aids in the essence-making process while improving the visual environment. The green wall is easy to access through large windows that create a sense of unity with the natural surroundings. Elements such as Monterey Pine for the cladding and flooring, along with steel used for the cantilevered glass box, show a commitment to sustainability and regional sourcing, firmly placing the building in its ecological context.
Light filters through the space, casting gentle reflections on the surfaces. The natural essence bowls capture sunlight, becoming focal points that invite contemplation and connection with the life outside.
