Elevated structure minimizes ground disturbance in the biosphere.
02
Staggered floor plans mimic tree trunk rings for organic design.
03
Vertical timber elements enhance views while providing structural support.
04
Central steel core allows for unobstructed sightlines toward the landscape.
05
Localized pad foundations reduce construction impact on the environment.

The Kurgi Observational Tower is situated in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve in Latvia, designed to provide a unique vantage point while respecting the local landscape. The tower functions as a place for observation, allowing visitors to connect with the natural surroundings. Its design is inspired by the form of a tree trunk, which helps it blend into the environment. The slender shape reduces visual disruption and invites exploration of the area.

Design Concept

The design reflects a strong connection to nature, focusing on harmony and simplicity. The tower features staggered floor plans that decrease in size as you move upward, resembling the rings found in a tree trunk. This configuration creates a dynamic spatial experience. Each upper level offers something different, cultivating an engaging environment for visitors.

Structural Elements

At the heart of the tower is a steel frame that supports all levels and includes a lift shaft. This structure ensures stability and safety while providing unobstructed views of the landscape. The use of vertical timber elements throughout the design reinforces the connection to the surrounding trees, enhancing the user experience with framed openings that draw attention to the scenery outside.

Foundation and Terrain Interaction

The tower is elevated on localized pad foundations, which allows it to sit above the ground and minimizes disturbance to the natural terrain. This thoughtful approach to construction helps preserve the site while reducing the need for heavy machinery during building. The foundation system highlights a commitment to coexistence with nature, making the tower feel less intrusive in its setting.

Lighting and Heating

Interior lighting is integrated through the use of vertically fixed fixtures that blend into the overall design. This choice reduces visual clutter and maintains a calming atmosphere for visitors. For warmth, the upper levels utilize an electrically powered radiant heat source. This approach efficiently provides comfort without taking up valuable space.

Carefully designed viewing platforms allow occupants to enjoy framed vistas of the rolling hills and dense forests. This connection with nature enhances the overall visitor experience, making interaction with the environment a central aspect of the tower’s purpose.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
