The FRINGE TOWER is located within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi. It is designed to fit into the landscape while providing visitors with unique opportunities to observe the area's flamingo population. The architectural concept focuses on blending human activity with the natural environment, emphasizing both educational and recreational experiences.

Function and Experience

The design supports various levels of visitor interaction. The ground level includes tiered seating that encourages informal learning and connection with nature. Above this, the second level offers standing areas that provide clear views of the flamingos. This makes it easy for visitors to watch the birds in their natural setting. The third level features comfortable seating and amenities for photographers and videographers, allowing them to spend time capturing the beauty of the wildlife.

Aesthetic Integration

The exterior of the tower reflects the life cycle of flamingos, using a palette of grey and pink. The grey facade acts as a simple and unobtrusive backdrop, while the pink side stands out against the greenery of the wetland. This choice of colors enhances the overall look of the building and reinforces the educational message related to the flamingo’s growth and development.

Materials and Construction

Treated timber is the main material used for the structure, providing strength while maintaining a natural feel. Cladding choices of wood or composite wood contribute to the building's connection with its surroundings. The decking options include composite wood or patterned concrete, ensuring that the surfaces are both practical and visually appealing for visitors.

Ecological Narrative

The visitor experience is organized around key stages of the flamingo life cycle, with dedicated educational stations that offer information about each stage. Topics such as egg, chick, adulthood, and parenthood are covered, fostering a deeper understanding of not only flamingos but the broader ecosystem. The boardwalk, which draws inspiration from traditional patterns and the look of flamingo feathers, creates a link between the structure and the vibrant nature around it.

At the top, the observation lookout provides expansive views of the wetland, bringing together the natural landscape and the built form into one cohesive experience that highlights the beauty of the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
