Timber Cladding and Pine Slats Enhance Meditative Retreat in Nature

Project in-detail

With meticulously arranged timber cladding and thoughtful cross-ventilation, the retreat creates an intimate space for meditation, allowing users to engage deeply with nature and themselves.
5 key facts about this project
01
Integrates a combination of an enclosed lower volume and an open upper volume for balanced meditation and connection to nature.
02
Inspired by the traditional tipi tent, enhancing the sense of security and communal space.
03
Employs cross-ventilation through operable windows to maintain comfort during warmer months.
04
Utilizes pine wood slats for interior finishes, creating a natural and warm aesthetic.
05
Features a sliding plywood door that allows for flexible spatial transitions between living and meditation areas.

The silent retreat focuses on fostering a connection between individuals and their natural surroundings. Located in a tranquil environment, it serves as a place where people can meditate and reflect away from the distractions of daily life. The design aims to create a setting that encourages users to reconnect with both themselves and the world around them.

Dual Volume Structure

The building features a dual-volume layout, consisting of a lower enclosed volume and an upper open volume. The lower section provides a sense of safety and intimacy, making it suitable for meditation practices. In contrast, the upper volume opens up to the landscape, allowing light and air to flow in. This design approach promotes a balance between secure solitude and exposure to nature, enriching the overall experience.

Spatial Organization

The layout is carefully arranged to separate spaces for meditation from private living areas, addressing different user needs. This separation allows individuals to focus on their spiritual practices while having access to necessary comforts. The design takes cues from traditional structures like the tipi tent, which highlights the importance of both shared and solitary spaces. Each segment serves its purpose while working together.

Materiality and Functionality

Materials contribute significantly to the retreat's atmosphere and practical use. An electric heater is included to provide warmth during colder months. Interior pine wood slats add a comforting aesthetic, enhancing the space. Timber cladding helps blend the building into its environment, while a plywood sliding door facilitates easy movement between areas, supporting a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor experiences.

Light and Nature

Natural light plays a vital role in the retreat, as strategically placed openings bring it into the interior. This illumination creates a welcoming atmosphere throughout the day. The interplay of light and shadow adds depth to the space and encourages contemplation. Users can engage with both their surroundings and themselves in a meaningful way, guided by the changing patterns of light outside.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
