UTOPIA is an architectural design that reimagines the library experience as a lively space for reading and community interaction. Set in either urban environments or quieter locations, it features a modular system made up of three unique components. The overall design focuses on creating a flexible reading wall that easily adapts to its surroundings while encouraging visitors to explore and engage.

Modular Components

The design includes several modules, each offering distinct functions that enhance the user experience. The "Reserved for Bookworms" module is a cozy area where individuals can relax and enjoy their reading in comfort. In contrast, the "Book a Coffee" module creates a lively atmosphere, allowing people to converse and share ideas over drinks and snacks. The "Tower of Wisdom" facilitates book exchanges and conversations among various groups, contributing to the project’s goal of fostering community engagement. Lastly, the "Book and Bike" module complements the library by promoting cycling, featuring a bike-fixing station for those who travel by bike.

Material Considerations

Materials chosen for UTOPIA are important for both structure and appearance. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) columns provide essential support, ensuring stability while also adding a warm feel to the space. Tight fit dowels create strong connections between the modular sections, helping to maintain a clean and smooth appearance. Metal plates are used to strengthen structural joints, contributing to the durability of the design, while anchor bolts secure any free-standing components, ensuring stability even in busy environments.

Spatial Arrangement

The layout encourages users to find their own comfortable spots for reading. Each area offers a sense of personal space within a broader framework. This flexibility supports both quiet reflection and social interaction, addressing different needs. Various reading spots, such as those located under arches and within the tower, invite readers to personalize their experience while interacting with others.

Arches run throughout the design, serving as passageways for visitors. They provide easy access to books and symbolize a transition into a world of knowledge and creativity.
