The Meditation Pavilion is located in the peaceful hills of Waitakaruru and serves the Earth Energies Sanctuary. It provides a space for activities such as meditation, yoga, and natural therapy. The design focuses on enhancing the human experience by promoting a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. By prioritizing openness and integration, the pavilion creates a calm environment that encourages mindfulness. Users are invited to engage deeply with nature and their own thoughts in this carefully designed structure.

Design Concept

The pavilion's design is based on the idea of blending with nature. Visitors enter through the engawa, transitioning from the outside world into a space that feels connected to its environment. This openness helps users experience the sounds of nature, like birds chirping and leaves rustling in the wind. The layout promotes interaction between indoor and outdoor areas, making it suitable for both personal reflection and group activities.

Spatial Arrangement

Inside, the pavilion features a large open floor that offers flexibility for various practices. This space can accommodate meditation sessions, yoga classes, and social gatherings. The arrangement reflects a goal of creating a supportive environment for people to connect with themselves and each other.

Materiality and Features

A soft, operable fabric ceiling is a key feature of the pavilion, diffusing sunlight to create a calm atmosphere. This ceiling moves gently, mimicking the flow of water, and changes throughout the day as light filters in. On the northern side, there is a timber altar that captures sunlight and allows for the extraction of raw essences for natural products. This element emphasizes a focus on sustainability within the design.

The facade includes a series of openings, such as sliding, folding, and hinged doors, which provide control over light and airflow. These features help balance the need for natural light with the desire for privacy. The thoughtful design of these elements ensures that the pavilion serves as a peaceful retreat, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a tranquil experience.

The pavilion’s design is characterized by the interplay of light and space, particularly through the fabric ceiling. As sunlight pours in, it creates an inviting ambiance that enhances the contemplative atmosphere, encouraging users to spend time in reflection and connection with their surroundings.
