Crafted with tilted roofs and hybrid beams, the design integrates a historical foundation while promoting community engagement through shared spaces, serving as a functional residence for families.
5 key facts about this project
01
Crafted around a historical foundation of an old barn, maintaining the site's heritage.
02
Utilizes hybrid beams for flexibility in construction and adaptation to the site.
03
Features tilted roofs that enhance wind protection in the inner yard.
04
Includes shared outdoor spaces to foster community interactions among families.
05
Designed with intentional nesting areas for local bat populations, promoting biodiversity.

The twin houses project is located near a calm lake and is designed to create a strong connection between the living spaces and the natural landscape. It features two identical houses, mirrored and angled at 30 degrees to better fit the site. The overall design is aimed at enhancing the experience of family life, balancing communal areas with private spaces.

Layout and Connections

These houses include a long hallway that serves as the main entrance and connects to a workshop. This design leads directly into spacious living and kitchen areas that are minimally separated, fostering interaction among family members. In the southern parts of each house, private bedrooms and bathrooms are positioned to provide personal retreats. The careful arrangement of these spaces promotes comfort and ease of movement throughout the home.

Historical Context and Site Integration

Respecting the historical background of the site, the southern house is built over the remains of an old structure, while the studio occupies the spot meant for a new barn. This thoughtful integration highlights the importance of the site’s history. The raised volumes, supported by hybrid beams, allow for flexibility in design. They adapt to existing foundations, helping to preserve the ecological character of the area.

Architectural Form and Environmental Response

The roofs of the twin houses slope towards the inner yard, providing protection from strong winds from the north and west. This design feature not only safeguards the spaces inside but also creates a harmonious appearance. A pergola extends from the roof, adding shelter and helping to manage breezes, improving comfort in outdoor areas.

Ecological Considerations

The design also includes measures to support local wildlife, such as rooftop spaces suitable for bat nesting. This aspect reflects an awareness of ecological responsibility, bringing nature into the urban setting. The various architectural elements work together to connect both the inhabitants and the environment in a meaningful way.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
