## Overview

Located in a desert climate, the project "Welcome Home" approaches residential architecture through a contemporary lens while drawing from traditional Middle Eastern influences. The design emphasizes ecological sensitivity and aims to enhance social interaction, privacy, and family dynamics within the living space. Central to the concept is the integration of courtyards and screens, allowing for a mixture of communal and private areas that cater to various lifestyles.

## Spatial Organization and Interaction

The spatial arrangement is characterized by a fluid transition between indoors and outdoors, with an emphasis on communal hubs. The ground floor centers around a courtyard and includes shared spaces such as living rooms, a majlis, kitchen, and service areas, promoting connectivity among users. The upper levels are dedicated to private bedrooms and offices, each connected to the courtyard via balconies, thus maintaining engagement with outdoor spaces.

The heart of the residence features a central courtyard, designed as a communal area that integrates a swimming pool and surrounding gardens, fostering tranquility. Interior spaces such as the living room, majlis, and master bedroom are designed for comfort and relaxation, utilizing open layouts and natural light to enhance the user experience.

## Material Choices and Sustainability

The project makes use of locally sourced materials to reinforce its connection to the environment. Key elements include locally sourced stone for structural integrity and thermal efficiency, hardwood for warmth and texture, and aluminum for the mashrabiya screens, which provide privacy and aesthetic appeal while allowing for shading. Large glass panels optimize natural lighting and create a visual connection with the courtyard.

Sustainability is a critical aspect, with features such as natural ventilation to reduce the reliance on air conditioning, rainwater harvesting systems for water recycling, and rooftop solar panels for energy efficiency. These choices reflect the project’s commitment to ecological responsibility while maintaining a comfortable living environment.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
