Design integrates large glass facades for unobstructed views of the Northern Lights.

The "Borealitos" project is a modular accommodation design located in Iceland, focusing on providing guests with an immersive experience of the Northern Lights. The architectural design emphasizes adaptability, allowing for various room configurations that cater to individual preferences and group needs. This modularity is a core feature that distinguishes the project, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape while meeting functional requirements.

The architecture utilizes a combination of glass facades and polycarbonate panels, ensuring thermal insulation while maximizing views of the unique Icelandic topography. The structure is constructed with a steel frame, which provides stability and strength to the modular units. Each accommodation unit is designed to facilitate interaction with the natural environment, allowing guests to connect with the landscape both visually and physically.

Modular Accommodation Design The modular arrangement allows for flexibility in room sizes, ranging from single occupancy to larger configurations tailored for families or groups. This adaptability enhances social interaction among guests, making the common areas significant spaces for communal gathering, facilitated by a central fireplace. Interior designs are minimal yet functional, ensuring that guests can enjoy a comfortable stay without distractions.

Sustainability and Material Selection Sustainability is a key component in the architectural design of Borealitos. The project incorporates recycled materials where feasible, reflecting a commitment to environmental responsibility. Energy-efficient systems and renewable resources are integrated within the design to minimize the ecological footprint. The use of lightweight materials, such as polycarbonate and insulated glass, further enhances energy conservation and reduces the impact of harsh weather conditions prevalent in the region.

Aesthetics and Cultural Context The design not only prioritizes functionality and sustainability but also pays homage to local culture and the natural beauty of Iceland. Large glass panels rethink traditional boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing guests to fully appreciate the Northern Lights from within their accommodations. The project reflects the characteristics of the landscape and local traditions, creating a unique architectural identity that invites guests to immerse themselves in an authentic Icelandic experience.

For a comprehensive understanding of the architectural plans, sections, and broader design ideas of the Borealitos project, readers are encouraged to explore the project's presentation further. Insights into specific architectural designs will enhance appreciation of this thoughtful accommodation approach, revealing the depth and potential of modern modular architecture.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
