## Overview

Located in Melbourne, Australia, the Melbourne Tattoo Academy functions as an educational and creative hub for tattoo artists. This facility aims to serve both artistic and practical purposes while reflecting the cultural narratives surrounding tattoo artistry. The design integrates aesthetic considerations with functionality, innovative materials, and a commitment to respecting the local environment and community.

## Spatial Strategy and User Interaction

The architectural configuration emphasizes an interconnected relationship between interior and exterior environments, enhancing the educational experience through natural light and artistic visibility. Key areas include a welcoming reception, a sunken waiting lounge, and a gallery space that amplifies the public's appreciation of tattoo art. Workspaces are designed to accommodate both communal collaboration and individual artistic pursuits, fostering a dynamic environment for creativity. A coffee shop/presentation venue is incorporated to facilitate social interaction, discussions, and workshops, while a roof garden provides a green respite that supports community engagement.

## Materiality and Sustainability

The building features a distinctive structural form characterized by interlocking angular volumes that echo the intricate designs found in tattoo artistry. Material selections include concrete, glass, and Cor-ten weathering steel, all chosen for their aesthetic and functional qualities. A focus on sustainability is evident through the implementation of a green roof that mitigates urban heat, energy-efficient designs that minimize solar gain, and durable materials that contribute to the longevity of the structure. These considerations create a productive environment while aligning with eco-friendly practices.
