The tasting room at Monte d’Oiro vineyard is located north of Lisbon, Portugal. Surrounded by hills and close to the Atlantic Ocean, the design draws inspiration from the natural landscape and the process of winemaking. The overall concept aims to create an environment that enhances the experience of tasting wine, connecting visitors with the land and traditions of viticulture.

Spatial Experience

The entry begins with a long, curved corridor that welcomes guests. This corridor is designed to let in natural light and create shadows that guide the way. As visitors walk through, they can feel the textured walls, heightening their anticipation for the tasting ahead. The movement through this space is not merely functional; it prepares guests for the experiences to come.

As guests leave the corridor, they arrive at the main tasting area. This space opens up dramatically, offering broad views of the vineyards beyond. The design ensures that visitors can appreciate the landscape while enjoying their wine. The transition from a narrow corridor to a wide tasting room serves to highlight the importance of the surroundings, celebrating the beauty of the vineyard.

Interactive Design Elements

Within the tasting room, large arch-shaped tables invite guests to sit and engage with one another and the sommelier. This layout fosters conversation and connection among participants, allowing for shared experiences. The arrangement is intentional, designed to keep the tasting process communal, enabling guests to discuss and enjoy their selections together.

Material Selection

The materials used in the design include terracotta roof tiles, laminated timber structures, glass facades, and cement flooring. Each material serves a purpose. Terracotta connects the space to local tradition. Laminated timber offers warmth and a modern touch. Glass facades help bring the outside in, allowing natural light to fill the interior and providing clear views of the vineyard.

The design focuses on the interplay of light and space. Visitors are enveloped in an atmosphere that encourages enjoyment and engagement with wine, while also promoting a deeper understanding of the craft behind it. The thoughtful arrangement and material choices work together to make the tasting experience memorable and rooted in the heart of the vineyard.
