Terracotta Facade Framing Vineyard Views in a Gathering Space

Project in-detail

The use of red terracotta tiles enhances the entrance, connecting the pavilion to its vineyard setting while offering a spacious gathering area for wine tasting and social interaction.
5 key facts about this project
01
The pavilion's entrance is defined by a vertical arrangement of red terracotta tiles.
02
A 15-degree sloped ceiling enhances natural light and western views.
03
Rainwater is collected and routed to a visible scupper on the deck.
04
The tasting table is designed to accommodate up to 30 guests.
05
The building's orientation aligns with the adjacent vineyard rows.

The Wine Tasting Room at Monte D'Oiro is located in the picturesque region of Estlemadura, Alenquer. It serves an important function as a space for wine tasting and appreciation. The design centers around the idea of a "view machine," creating a strong connection between the structure and the surrounding vineyard landscape. The building's orientation allows visitors to enjoy both the beauty of the area and the experience of tasting wine.

Key Features and Functionality

The design includes several features that enhance visitor comfort and interaction. A large tasting table can accommodate up to 30 guests, making it ideal for social gatherings. There is also a bar area and a storage space for guests' coats. These elements work together to create an inviting environment for sharing wine and conversation. A sliding glass door opens the tasting room to an exterior deck, allowing easy access and a closer connection to nature.

Architectural Detail and Materiality

Thoughtful architectural details define the character of the space. The entrance is framed by vertical red terracotta tiles, which visually relate to the existing winery roof and provide a modern touch. Inside, the ceiling slopes upward at a 15-degree angle, drawing attention to the western views while improving natural light in the room. The design incorporates a rainwater collection system, with a scupper located along the north deck, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

Spatial Experience and Perspectives

The tasting room is designed to offer various perspectives that engage visitors fully. From the bar, deck, and tasting table, guests can appreciate the relationship between the building and the vineyard. Each viewpoint reveals another aspect of the landscape, deepening the connection between the environment and the experience of wine tasting. The interplay of light and shadow across different surfaces, particularly the contrast between the terracotta tiles and smooth white stucco, adds visual interest and invites guests to explore the space.
