Terracotta and Stone Integration in a Communal Gathering Space

Project in-detail

Set against the backdrop of Tili's expansive grape fields, the integration of terracotta and stone creates a central piazza designed for communal gatherings and wine experiences.
5 key facts about this project
01
A central piazza serves as the heart of the guesthouse, encouraging community interaction.
02
Underground wine storage enhances the tasting experience and connects guests with local winemaking.
03
Clerestory windows offer abundant natural light while maintaining a visual link to the sky.
04
Terracotta and stone materials reflect local building traditions while providing structural durability.
05
The design distorts the vineyard grid, creating a dynamic relationship between the architecture and landscape.

LA PIAZZA is a design situated in the picturesque setting of wine country. It brings people together, creating a central space known as the piazza for social interaction. Located among Tili's grape fields, the design connects guests with the natural surroundings. The project modifies the standard layout of the vineyard by introducing a new dynamic, integrating traditional Umbrian architectural styles with modern elements to foster a welcoming environment.

Central Gathering Space

At the core of the guesthouse lies the piazza, designed to encourage connections among guests. This space allows for movement between indoor areas and the outside, enabling people to appreciate the beauty of the vineyards. The long, glazed exterior provides uninterrupted views of the grape fields, which enhances the overall experience of being in the landscape.

Architectural Integration

The design thoughtfully combines traditional building techniques with contemporary comforts. Clerestory windows admit natural light while offering views of the sky, contributing to an enjoyable atmosphere inside. The structure’s form pays homage to local architecture while ensuring it meets the needs of modern users.

Unique Features

A notable aspect is the underground wine storage that adds depth to the guest experience. This area, accessible from the piazza, allows for direct engagement with the winemaking process. By inviting exploration, this feature strengthens the link between the building and the vineyard.

Material Connection

Materials play an important role in grounding the design within its location. Traditional Assisi terracotta roof tiles and glazed terracotta bricks reflect the area’s building heritage. The use of stone bricks with mortar for the walls adds durability and enhances the tactile quality of the structure, reinforcing the bond with the landscape.

A carefully considered attention to detail creates a unified relationship between nature and the built environment, allowing guests to fully experience the charm of wine country.
