The Tiber River is an essential part of Rome, providing both history and beauty to the city. An architectural design aims to reconnect people with this vital waterway by revitalizing the space along its banks. The goal is to create a living environment that respects the historical significance of the Tiber while addressing the needs of modern urban life. This project blends residential units with the natural landscape of the river, offering a balance between community and nature.

Cohesive Modular Design

The design makes use of prefabricated modular units that fit together to form a unified structure. This system is flexible, allowing for different arrangements based on the site’s conditions. Central corridors and shared areas enhance social interaction among residents. Skylights provide natural light and connect the inside of the building with views of the river, reinforcing the importance of the Tiber in daily life.

Site Adaptation

The project responds thoughtfully to the landscape. In areas with steep stone masonry embankments, the units are arranged to blend in with the existing terrain. This approach honors the historical context while making the building more accessible. In locations where the riverbanks slope gently, the modules are stacked in a terraced fashion. This design encourages community interaction and allows for shared spaces that promote social connections among tenants.

Environmental Integration

Environmental sustainability is a key focus of the design. Floating platforms lined with plants serve as beautiful features that also help clean the polluted waters of the Tiber. These platforms use geotextile filtration systems to improve water quality while providing residents with green spaces to enjoy. This careful integration of natural elements creates a healthier environment and enhances the overall quality of life.

The design creates a calm atmosphere in an otherwise busy city. The arrangement of living spaces and communal areas encourages residents to connect with one another and spend time outdoors. Large windows and lounges allow for views of the river, inviting a sense of tranquility and appreciation for nature. In this project, architecture and the Tiber River work together to create a pleasant living experience for the community.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
