A telescopic barrel form extends outward to frame the dramatic landscape of Grjotagja, creating a cinema designed for immersive storytelling and community engagement in Iceland's unique natural setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Telescopic barrel design enhances visual connections with the surrounding landscape.
02
The screening hall is isolated for complete immersion in cinematic experiences.
03
Strategically placed origami-inspired windows offer panoramic views and natural light.
04
Spiral staircase provides fluid movement between multiple functional spaces.
05
Location-specific features reflect the unique geology of the Grjotagja area.

The new cinema located near the Grjotagja caves in Iceland integrates with the natural environment while serving an important cultural function. This project reflects the dramatic landscape and cold climate of the region, focusing on themes such as exploration and connection. The design is influenced by the narrative of searching, a central idea in Icelandic cinema, which shapes both the structure and the user experience.

Architectural Form

The cinema is designed like a telescopic barrel, extending in four directions to engage with its surroundings. This choice of form allows for various views of the striking landscape, making the building part of the experience for visitors. The architecture captures the rugged qualities of the site, creating a balance between natural features and the constructed elements.

Spatial Organization

A spiral staircase serves as the main element of movement within the cinema, connecting different spaces. The centerpiece is a screening hall, crafted for an immersive viewing experience. Here, audiences can focus on films without outside distractions. The isolation of this space allows for a deeper connection with the stories being told, making it suitable for individual enjoyment and social gatherings.

Natural Light and View

Natural light plays a significant role in the design, introduced through strategically placed windows with an origami-inspired shape. These windows create a combination of light and shadow within the building while offering wide views of the surrounding landscape. The cross-shaped window designs frame the scenery outside, enhancing the relationship between the cinema and the natural beauty of Iceland.

Material Considerations

While the specific materials used in the construction are not mentioned, the architectural approach indicates a desire to reflect the geology of the location. The design suggests rock-like textures and flowing, water-inspired curves, highlighting a connection to environmental elements and reinforcing the harmony between the cinema and its setting.

This cinema not only provides entertainment but also invites visitors to connect with the captivating Icelandic landscape. Its thoughtful design reflects the region's cultural narratives while enhancing the experience of film through a strong relationship with nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
