The Volcano Coffee Shop is located in Iceland at the intersection of the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This coffee shop is designed to be a space for visitors to gather, relax, and find information about the unique geological features of the area. The design concept is inspired by the forces of nature that shape the landscape, reflecting the tension and movement of the earth's crust in both its function and form. This connection enhances the experience for users while emphasizing the site's natural context.

Architectural Concept

The design prominently features two wall panels that symbolize the edges of the tectonic plates. These panels serve as a visual representation of the geological dynamics that exist beneath the surface. The arrangement of these elements informs the overall geometry of the building, illustrating the ongoing movement of the plates and establishing a dialogue between the architecture and the geological history of the region.

Integration with Landscape

Much of the structure is intentionally designed to sit below a layer of lava, helping it blend into the volcanic terrain. This design choice not only emphasizes the building’s connection to the landscape but also roots it within the broader story of Iceland’s geological activity. The visible wall panels create a striking contrast with the natural surroundings, serving as visual markers that draw attention and invite exploration.

Visitor Engagement

An open floor plan encourages interaction among visitors. The spacious entrance creates an inviting atmosphere, making it easy for people to socialize and relax before heading out for outdoor adventures. Additionally, the inclusion of a small exhibition room offers educational opportunities for visitors to learn about Iceland’s geological features, enriching their experience and fostering a deeper connection to the environment.

Detailing and Context

The presentation text does not specify materials used in construction, but the design suggests a thoughtful consideration of the local environment. The choice of materials would likely complement the volcanic landscape, reinforcing the harmony between the coffee shop and its surroundings. Attention to these details enhances the building's connection to the site while ensuring it serves both functional and educational purposes, allowing visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of Iceland.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
