Tectonic Inspiration With Precast Concrete and Cross-Laminated Softwood Structure

Project in-detail

Drawing inspiration from the region's tectonic plates, the visitor center utilizes precast concrete and cross-laminated softwood to create a harmonious connection with the landscape while providing essential services for exploring the striking natural phenomena of northeastern Iceland.
5 key facts about this project
01
Drawing from tectonic inspiration, the design reflects the geological features of the region.
02
The visitor center employs precast concrete for structural integrity while minimizing environmental impact.
03
Cross-laminated softwood is used to enhance warmth and connect the building to the landscape.
04
Strategic window placement maximizes natural light and offers scenic views of the surroundings.
05
The layout emphasizes exploration, with hidden areas that gradually reveal the building's interior.

The Mývatn Visitor Center in northeastern Iceland is located in a region known for its unique geological formations, particularly the tectonic plate convergence. It serves an important role in connecting visitors with the natural phenomena of the area. The design takes inspiration from the surroundings, facilitating an engagement with both the architecture and the stunning landscape.

Design Configuration

The center consists of two main segments that come together to form a central hall. This setup creates a pathway encouraging exploration as visitors move through the building. Some areas are intentionally hidden from view, enhancing the experience of discovery. As guests progress further into the space, they uncover various layers that lead to the remarkable caves nearby.

Spatial Organization

The interior layout promotes interaction and exploration. Asymmetrical shapes and sharp lines throughout the design echo the natural features found in the landscape. This choice enhances visual variety and allows for different experiences within the visitor center. Areas that offer some privacy and numerous viewpoints enrich the journey, inviting guests to appreciate both the built spaces and the beauty of the outdoors.

Functional Elements

The visitor center includes several essential spaces, such as a main entrance, a shop for souvenirs, information desks, seating areas, and a café. The careful arrangement of these spaces makes movement easier for visitors, encouraging them to engage with the center’s offerings. Vertical circulation is integrated effectively, combining storage and seating in a way that supports a smooth experience.

Material Considerations

The materials chosen for construction include precast concrete and cross-laminated softwood. These materials provide structural strength while being respectful of the surrounding environment. Hardwood cladding adds warmth to the design, strengthening the connection between the building and the Icelandic landscape.

Windows and openings are strategically placed to maximize natural light. Visitors experience warmth from sunlight streaming through, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The light dances across the surfaces within, enhancing the overall experience of exploring the center.
