The design for Quinta Do Monte d'Oiro sits within a beautiful vineyard, focusing on enhancing wine tasting experiences. The project encourages visitors to engage their senses, especially through the act of swirling wine. This idea shapes the building's form and function, allowing it to connect with its natural surroundings while offering an inviting space for exploration and tasting.

Swirling Ramp

At the heart of the design is a swirling ramp. It acts as a roof for the tasting room and offers a place for observation. This form symbolizes the movement of wine in a glass, engaging guests as they approach. The ramp draws attention, inviting curiosity about the interior while providing views of the vineyard. It plays a significant role in defining the overall visitor experience.

Structural Integration

The building is built into the landscape, using wood frames that rest on concrete pad foundations for support. These frames are linked by steel beams that hold up a precast white concrete slab forming the swirling ramp and green roof. This structure is designed to minimize the visual impact on the surrounding area, ensuring that the building feels part of its environment while providing the necessary stability.

Natural Lighting and Views

Panoramic windows with narrow black aluminum frames allow plenty of natural light into the space. These windows also provide clear views of the vineyard, connecting the interior with the landscape outside. By bringing in light and views, the design creates an inviting atmosphere for guests as they enjoy their wine tasting. The arrangement emphasizes the importance of the natural environment and enhances the overall experience.

Interior Arrangement

Inside the tasting room, a curved table shapes the seating arrangement. This design lets guests sit side by side, ensuring that everyone has an uninterrupted view of the landscape. The layout promotes interaction among visitors while also considering social distancing needs. With clear separations, it provides some privacy for different groups but still maintains an open feeling throughout the room.

The design offers a unique way for guests to connect with the vineyard and the wine. The swirling ramp and large windows encourage exploration and enjoyment of the surroundings, creating a rich and memorable tasting experience.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
