La Rama: Connected Space is located in La Puebla de Fantova. The design emphasizes a strong relationship between the built environment and the natural landscape, supporting both community interaction and artistic expression. The concept of “the branch” highlights connectivity among residents, their cultural identity, and the environment around them.

Design and Layout

The overall layout centers on a main circulation axis that links essential spaces within the complex. This approach encourages walking and minimizes vehicle access, allowing visitors to engage deeply with the natural surroundings. The design supports an immersive experience, inviting people to appreciate the landscape while moving through the site.

Public Engagement

At the core of the project is a public plaza that serves as a gathering space for community activities. This area fosters social interaction and provides a venue for exploration. By integrating green pathways and open areas, the design encourages visitors to traverse the site and enjoy both natural beauty and architectural elements.

Architectural Integration

Buildings have been designed to harmonize with the existing landscape, carefully considering the placement of olive trees and the topography of the site. The project maintains a low built coverage, capped at 30%, allowing for future developments or eco-farming practices. This integration ensures a balanced relationship between nature and the built environment.

Residences for Artists

The residential units cater specifically to the needs of artists, supporting creativity through thoughtful design. These homes are constructed on stilts, reducing their impact on the environment while providing flexibility for future alterations. Large openings and open mezzanines allow abundant natural light and views of the surroundings, fostering an inspiring atmosphere for residents.

Skylights add to the design, enhancing illumination throughout the spaces while decreasing energy use. This detail further emphasizes the commitment to sustainability, making sure that every aspect of the project reflects a responsibility towards both residents and nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
